Remediation of Petroleum-Impacted Soil, Former UST at Hawthorne Municipal Airport, Hawthorne, CA

Location of the site (UST was in the foreground). The site is located next to the SpaceX facility in Hawthorne, CA.

Soil samples collected with hollow stem auger drilling

Surface completed with reinforced concrete

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operated an Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) at the Hawthorne Municipal Airport. Diesel to the AFSS was supplied by a 4000-gallon underground storage tank which leaked and contaminated soil beneath the site. The Bodhi Group was retained by the FAA to investigate and remediate the petroleum-contaminated soil.

The Bodhi Group:

  • Prepared and implemented an investigation work plan consisting of the drilling and sampling of soil borings by hollow-stem auger for petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.
  • The conceptual model showed petroleum contamination extending to the depth of the excavation used to remove the former UST.
  • Prepared a Remedial Action Plan to remove the petroleum contaminated soil.
  • Removed the contaminated soil by excavation, collected confirmation soil samples for laboratory analysis in a mobile laboratory to show that contaminated soil had been effectively removed and backfilled the excavation with self-compacting gravel completed at the surface with reinforced concrete.
  • Prepared a Remedial Action Completion Report and obtained regulatory closure for the site.
  • The FAA project manager commended the Bodhi Group “I received the closure letter for Hawthorne this morning and have attached a copy. Again, thanks for your work on this project.  Project execution by you and your subcontractors was excellent!”
